Canaan's Pregnancy & Birth Story

I'm so excited to share Canaan's birth story, and to write it down so I can remember it for years to come.  I was just reading over Bailey's birth story, and it's such a treasure.

Canaan's birth was a scheduled c-section since I had a partial uterine rupture with Declan, and they did not want me to go into labor.  Dr. Thompson wanted to schedule the c-section for 37 weeks.  The hospital first scheduled it for May 9th, but our Stride for Life was May 10th and I didn't want to miss it, so they rescheduled for May 15th, which put me at 37 weeks 6 days.

It was so nice to have the birth scheduled and not have to wonder about when labor would start.  However, I had a lot of anxiety and fear with this pregnancy since our last baby, Asa, was stillborn with no explanation.  I really struggled every day and was afraid to be excited about a new baby since I knew that a baby dying is a real possibility.

I went to the doctor once around 20 weeks because I thought the baby had stopped moving.  Obviously, he was fine, and it was just a little too early for me to be feeling him consistently, but I am surprised I was only at the doctor's office once to address my fears.  I had appointments every two weeks for most of the pregnancy and an ultrasound every month to make sure he was growing well.  Since I had experienced a silent doppler check and seen a still baby on the ultrasound, I was terrified at nearly every appointment.

All that being said, it feels a little surreal to be "on the other side", to have our sweet boy here with us now.  The pregnancy was so hard, but he was worth it.  So here is how he arrived....

As I said, the c-section was scheduled for May 15.  Two days before, the hospital called to get some information and to tell me that I needed to arrive at 5:30am - early!  But I think it was better to do it early than to be anticipating it all day.  I didn't think I would sleep well the night before, but I did.  So we arrived at 5:30, along with my sister.  I'm so glad she dragged herself out of bed early to be there with us.  There is no friend like a sister, and she's been there with me through it all.  :)

So I arrived at the birthing suite, checked in, and got to my room to get ready.  My nurse was Jenny who happens to live in our neighborhood, and her parents live right behind us.  She has a 3 year old son who comes over to play with our kids sometimes.  My veins are usually hard to get, so they got one of the more experienced nurses to do my iv, and thankfully she got it on the second try.  They got me hooked up to the monitor to watch baby's heartbeat for a while (what a treat to get to hear it for a good half hour, though even that brought fearful thoughts to my head) and gave me a bag of iv fluids and antibiotics since I had tested positive for Group B Strep.  The anesthesiologist, Dr. Henson, came in to talk to me a bit.  With the other kids I had an epidural since I had labored with them, but I would have a spinal block this time since it was a scheduled c-section.  Next Dr. Thompson came in to talk to me about the surgery and then he left to get suited up.

I waited a while longer while they were getting everything ready.  I was so ready to get going!  Finally Dr. Henson came to get me and we walked to the OR, which was weird for me, along with climbing up onto the cold, sterile operating table, since I had only been rolled there on a bed in the past.  Once I got in there he numbed my back and gave me the spinal block.  It took a few minutes for the spinal to numb me up, and then Anthony could come in.  I remember telling him to talk to me about something to take my mind off of the discomfort that comes along with having your insides messed with.  :)

But just a few minutes later we heard the amazing, sweet cries from our little Canaan.  That was the moment I had been waiting so many months for.  Once I knew he was out of me and okay, that heavy burden of worry I had carried for so long was just lifted away.  I cried tears of relief and happiness.  That was definitely one of the best moments of my life.  He was healthy, weighing in at 6 pounds 14 ounces, and 18 inches long.

My friend, April, who is a nurse there, had worked out her schedule so she could be working and there with me during the c-section.  That was so sweet of her, and such a blessing to me.  Another nurse who was in the OR, Megan, was there with us when Asa was born as well, and was actually the one who tearfully took him from my arms before we left the hospital.  She has a special place in my heart for her compassion towards us, so I was so thankful that she got to be there for this happy birth.

After Canaan was born, he went off to the nursery with Anthony.  Once they started "fixing me up" I was really uncomfortable so Dr. Henson kindly put me under general anesthesia so I could sleep the rest of the surgery.  I had been awake the whole time for my other c-sections but this was a change I was happy to have.  I just remember Dr. Henson saying something about letting me sleep after I told him that I was uncomfortable and the next thing I remember is waking up back in my room again.  Fabulous!  :)  I think Ashley was in the room with me and I told her something about how good I was feeling - haha!

Then of course they brought Canaan in to me so he could nurse, and he picked it up right away.  We had a great stay in the hospital and got to go home on Saturday the 17th.  Canaan has been such a blessing to our whole family.  Bailey & Declan absolutely love him (Declan was a little standoff-ish at first, though never jealous or mean).  I'm so, so thankful for the redemption I feel through the safe and healthy arrival of our little Canaan Brooks.
